Metals / Wire

sterling silver - Sterling silver is an alloy metal which is 92.5% fine silver and 7.5% another metal. traditionally copper. The sterling silver wire I stock is made from 100% recycled sterling silver. It is half hard, except for 12g which is dead soft.

gold filled - Gold filled wire is substantial layer of 14k gold bonded to a brass alloy. The name can be misleading, as it makes one thing that the wire is filled with gold, rather than the other way around. Think of the wire as a garden hose of 14k gold, and the water running through the hose is the brass alloy. The outer layer of gold is much thicker than a plating -- 1/20th of the overal composition is 14k gold. Nickel free. The yellow 14k gold wire I stock is half hard, with the exception of 12 and 14g, which is dead soft.

silver filled - Silver filled wire is substantial layer of sterling silver bonded to a brass alloy. The name can be misleading, as it makes one thing that the wire is filled with silver, rather than the other way around. Think of the wire as a garden hose of sterling silver, and the water running through the hose is the brass alloy. The outer layer of sterling silver is much thicker than a plating -- 1/10th of the overal composition is sterling silver. Nickel free. The wire I stock is half hard, with the exception of 12 and 14g, which is dead soft.

NuGold brass - Nugold brass can also go by the name of red brass, merlin's gold, jewelry brass, or jeweler's brass. It is an alloy of 85% copper and 15% zinc (CDA #230 alloy). The wire I stock is dead soft, and so has a little less springback than sterling silver when coiled.

copper - 99.9% pure copper, CDA #110. The wire I stock is dead soft, and so has a little less springback than sterling silver when coiled.
Copper is rumored to have health benefits in keeping bones, skin, brain, blood vessels and immune system strong and healthy. Many people also wear copper to alleviate the symptons and pain of arthritis. (Please note that I do not make any such claims.)
